Making Boundaries

In this project, Marie Panken explores how we can use learning through making to practice noticing, reading, establishing, and respecting boundaries with children in primary education. She introduces the term material mediator: a material used to represent the boundaries between us. Shifting boundary making from an abstract, internal process into a tangible material offers us a tool to literally and figuratively shape our boundaries. The playful nature of the material mediators and their prompts allows the children to explore complex negotiations of touch and proximity from a place of curiosity.
We require primary school students to spend the better part of 5 days a week in a 50 m² classroom, sharing space with around 23 other people. They do not get to choose with whom, they do not get the choice to leave. A setting demanding skillful boundary making. The main boundary tool currently offered is the Dutch phrase “Stop, hou op!” (“Stop, quit it!”). This research asks how we might move beyond teaching boundaries solely as an emergency break. And instead work towards “The skillful use of boundaries allowing us to create proximity intimacy, distance.”
