Igniting a Feeling for Drawing: Drawing Lines and Boundaries

Pushing to question why adults stop drawing, this research is an invitation to draw again. Taking this as a starting point, the research project seeks out to explore boundaries and ways of building connection with drawing as a facilitator. Working nomadically and intuitively, I seek participants and temporary communities with whom I sustain modes of research and collaboration with others though workshops and conversations These explore participants’ relationships with drawing and where they draw the line.

The expression ‘drawing a line’ encapsulates both the drawing and boundary that I explore in this research project. By its literal meaning, it describes to us how a drawing can be made, by drawing a line on a piece of paper. Metaphorically it describes setting a boundary.

Each research action is presented in a storytelling format, throughout this project, capturing moments of interaction in workshops or conversations. These stories are reflected upon in based on participants’ feedback, lived experiences and my own close observations, supporting and accommodating further iterations. Additionally, I relate these stories to a broader context, reflecting on and questioning how notions of social engagement, care and time can subvert the current hyper-individualistic and outcome-driven system.
