Drawn to Drawing

Drawn to Drawing addresses the widespread hesitation around drawing, challenging the conventional notion of drawing as a skill to be mastered or a talent to be judged. This research asks: What happens when drawing is practiced through playful scores in the context of artist-run initiatives?

Grounded in the Drawing Club (an artist-run initiative based at the collective studio Kunst Fabriek Zuid in Rotterdam) as the primary site of inquiry, this project explores drawing as a relational and collective process. Mediated by open-ended scores, these sessions act as triggers for action, shifting the focus from judging final results to the immediate experience of making a drawing. By introducing physical constraints, the Drawing Club aims to liberate drawing from the isolated hand by involving our entire sensitive body in its process.

The research leads into a hands-on toolkit developed in collaboration with my friend and artist Mariana Santos, inviting others to implement their own Club practices and collaborations, “Rip these ideas apart, change the rules, and makethem yours”
