Documenting Living Heritage and Navigating Cultural Identity Through Art – Tatiana Nicolaas

This thesis explores the experiences of Caribbean artists living and working in the Netherlands, focusing on how their cultural background shapes their identity, creative work, and interaction with different audiences. As a Caribbean art educator from Bonaire who relocated to the Netherlands, I personally experienced a shift in how I was perceived, no longer just an artist or educator, but specifically a Caribbean one. This raised questions about visibility, representation, and the unique challenges faced by Caribbean creatives in a European context.
The core research question asks: What impact does cultural background have on a Caribbean artist and their work in the Netherlands? Sub-questions explore challenges and opportunities, the role of cultural symbols, audience perception, and navigation of the Dutch art scene.
The research combines theory and practice. It draws on literature around Caribbean identity, diaspora, geography, and the relationship between artist and audience. The practical part consists of in-depth, on-site interviews with a diverse group of Caribbean creatives, from photographers and painters to choreographers and comedians, each representing different islands and disciplines.
These conversations reveal a common tension between personal expression and public expectation, especially around cultural representation. They also highlight the artists’ efforts to stay connected to their roots while building new paths abroad. Many expressed a need for more visibility and support, both in the Netherlands and back home.
Ultimately, this research serves as both documentation and inspiration. It sheds light on underrepresented voices in the art world and aims to build bridges between the Caribbean and its diaspora. It is also a personal step toward becoming a more reflective educator and advocate for Caribbean art and artists everywhere.
